U.S. real gross domestic product (GDP) grew at a 3.4% annualized rate in July–September, up from 2.2% in the second quarter, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported October 29. A second estimate is scheduled for November 25. (Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2026a)
The seasonally adjusted quarter-to-quarter increase was 0.8% after rounding; annualization expresses the pace over a year. Investment, consumer spending and government spending contributed to growth, while exports declined and imports increased. (Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2026a)
The quarter’s personal consumption expenditures (PCE) inflation rate was 2.1% annualized. Separately, September’s PCE price index rose 0.5% from August and 3.6% from a year earlier. These figures cover different periods and are not interchangeable. (Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2026a; Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2026b)
September’s inflation-adjusted disposable personal income fell 0.3%. Real consumer spending rose less than 0.1%, rounded to 0.0% in BEA’s table. Strong quarterly output therefore coexisted with a weaker monthly household reading. (Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2026b)
Reuters reported that economists in its survey had expected 3.2% growth. Its reporting also quoted Century Foundation economist Kyle Moore arguing that growth alone does not establish families’ economic security. (Mutikani, 2026)
Editorial Opinion
Neither a strong growth headline nor a gloomy household reading tells the whole story. The apparent tension here reflects different measures and time periods, not a contradiction to explain away. Public debate should ask who benefits from expansion and whether purchasing power improves, while leaving room for revisions to the first estimate. (Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2026a; Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2026b)
