At least six people were killed and 15 injured after a gunman opened fire near Kraków’s main market square on Saturday, November 7, according to Polish police accounts reported by DW. France 24 also reported six deaths and more than a dozen injuries.

Police said the attacker fired at people from a car in the historic city center at about 3 p.m. local time. Officers were among those wounded. The suspect was injured in an exchange of gunfire with police and taken to a hospital, according to the reports.

Police say the attacker acted alone

France 24, citing Kraków police spokesperson Katarzyna Cisło’s comments to TVN24, reported that the suspect was a Polish citizen who acted alone. Cisło said police found additional weapons and ammunition in his vehicle and that the public was safe.

The city’s transport company also reported that a tram was fired on near the square, shattering the driver’s cabin window, according to France 24.

Investigation continues

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said police were investigating. President Karol Nawrocki expressed sympathy for the victims, the injured and their families. Neither of the reports reviewed identified a motive.

This is a developing story. Casualty figures and other details may change as authorities release further information.

Editorial Opinion

The victims and their families deserve a careful account of what happened. Investigators should establish the sequence of events and the attacker’s motive. Early reports do not justify assigning a political explanation or broader responsibility.
