Correction and disposition update — October 31, 2026: The original brief said Dolezal “illegally collected” assistance while describing pending allegations. That wording has been corrected to attribute the allegation. The headline now reflects the later dismissal; the original July 3, 2018 publication date is retained.

July 3, 2018 reporting, corrected: Spokane County, Washington — Rachel Dolezal, also known as Nkechi Diallo, was booked for fingerprinting and released while facing welfare-fraud and related charges. The original brief, citing Fox News, reported allegations that she received about $8,800 in food and child-care assistance between August 2015 and November 2017 while failing to report income. Those were allegations, not a trial finding.

Later outcome, verified from court records: Spokane County’s docket for case No. 18-1-02237-2 lists a diversion order on March 25, 2019. A June 6, 2019 pretrial-services report states that Diallo completed 120 hours of community service and paid $8,847 in restitution in full. The prosecutor then requested dismissal because she had completed the diversion requirements. The judge’s order, signed June 7 and filed June 10, 2019, dismissed both counts: first-degree theft–welfare fraud and making false verification. The case ended through diversion and dismissal, rather than a trial verdict.
