Correction and outcome update — October 31, 2026: The original headline and text described the offense as bank fraud and identified Awan as a DNC aide. His plea was to making a false statement on a loan application under 18 U.S.C. § 1014; he worked as an IT aide for congressional offices. The headline and body have been corrected. The original July 3, 2018 publication date is retained.

July 3, 2018 reporting, corrected: Washington — Imran Awan, a former IT aide to Debbie Wasserman Schultz and other congressional Democrats, pleaded guilty to making a false statement on a loan application. Prosecutors reported finding no evidence that he violated federal law with respect to House computer systems. The loan offense was separate from his congressional IT work. The original brief cited Fox News.

Later outcome: On August 21, 2018, Awan was sentenced to time served and three months of supervised release. The D.C. Court of Appeals recounts the plea, prosecutors’ findings concerning House computer systems and the sentence in its September 7, 2023 opinion, pages 9–13. That later civil appeal provides the cited account of the criminal disposition; it is not a new criminal conviction.
