Deck: October releases show higher store receipts alongside a sharp fuel-price increase, with much smaller sales growth outside gas stations.
U.S. retail and food-service sales rose in September as gasoline-station receipts increased sharply. The Census Bureau’s October 15 advance report put sales at $745 billion, up 0.8% from August. The figures account for seasonal and calendar differences, but do not adjust for price increases. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2026)
Gasoline-station sales rose 6.4% from August, while sales excluding those businesses increased just 0.2%. The figures measure revenue, not fuel volume. Furniture and home-furnishing store receipts rose 1.3%; building-material and garden-equipment dealers recorded a 0.6% decline. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2026)
The separate consumer-price report, released October 14, recorded a 9.1% monthly increase in gasoline prices. Fuel accounted for more than half of the overall monthly price increase. The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers rose 0.6% in September after a 0.4% August increase, using seasonally adjusted figures. Over the 12 months through September, the overall index rose 3.7% before seasonal adjustment, compared with 3.4% through August. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2026)
Price pressure extended beyond energy. The index excluding food and energy rose 0.3% for the month and 2.6% over the year. Shelter increased 0.4% in September, while grocery prices fell 0.1%. Associated Press reporting carried by WABE cited Fifth Third Bank economist Bill Adams’s assessment that the increases affected a broad range of goods and services. That assessment is an economist’s interpretation of the release, rather than an additional price survey. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2026; Associated Press, 2026)
The retail estimates can be revised. Census reported a sampling margin of plus or minus 0.4 percentage points for September’s monthly gain, at the 90% confidence level. It revised August’s increase from 1.1% to 1.3%. The next advance retail report is scheduled for November 17. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2026)
Editorial Opinion
Public discussion of consumer strength should give purchasing power as much attention as cash-register totals. Rising receipts can accompany greater financial strain when essential purchases become more expensive. Policymakers should explain which costs they can influence, acknowledge those they cannot quickly change, and judge progress by what households can buy after paying unavoidable bills. A larger spending total deserves scrutiny before it becomes a claim that families are better off.
