The company released the 16-core Zen 5 desktop processor in April and describes 208MB of total on-chip cache. That total includes more than the 192MB L3 figure reported in the review below; the two cache numbers describe different totals. (Advanced Micro Devices, 2026) (Burke et al., 2026)

The design places second-generation 3D V-Cache beneath the processor cores, according to AMD. Cache keeps frequently reused data close to the CPU, but adding capacity does not establish how much an application will speed up. AMD’s developer-and-creator positioning is a manufacturer claim that still needs workload evidence. (Advanced Micro Devices, 2026)

GamersNexus found a modest gaming change in many comparisons with the existing 9950X3D. In its Baldur’s Gate 3 test at 1080p, the new chip averaged 178 fps, about 5% ahead. In its Cyberpunk 2077 test at 1080p/Medium, the two processors were within 1%, which the lab treated as functionally equal. (Burke et al., 2026)

One scientific workload stood apart: GamersNexus reported a 34% higher SPECWorkstation OpenFOAM score than the 9950X3D. Crucially, it labeled those scientific charts experimental and warned that the exceptional result might not represent other fluid-dynamics work. Reporting the uplift without that limitation would exaggerate the evidence. (Burke et al., 2026)

The review’s roughly $900 price context dates to April, not a fresh October retail check. Its tests establish neither that this is the best processor for all creators nor that a cache-sensitive specialist should dismiss it. PartialMedia has not reproduced those measurements or independently audited a professional application’s return on the upgrade. (Burke et al., 2026)

Editorial Opinion

This is an interesting design with a narrow purchasing argument: show that the extra cache helps the software you actually use. AMD’s broad performance language and a reviewer’s poor-value verdict can coexist when they refer to different workloads and prices. Likewise, 208MB total cache and 192MB L3 are not a contradiction. The useful distinction is between a documented workload gain and a sweeping claim that more cache makes every expensive CPU purchase worthwhile.

References

Advanced Micro Devices.
