In the September 8–15 interviews, 89% called the economy one of the most important election issues, 83% said the same of living costs, and 73% identified health care. These are September responses, not a new measurement of opinion on October 24. (AP-NORC & AAPI Data, 2026a)

The survey found that 41% trusted Democrats more on the economy, compared with 21% favoring Republicans. Yet the Democratic Party’s overall image was mixed: 44% viewed it favorably and 48% unfavorably. An advantage on an issue is a different measurement from enthusiasm for a party. (AP-NORC & AAPI Data, 2026a)

AP’s accompanying interviews illustrated that distinction. It described respondents who criticized prices or governance while maintaining different party preferences, including a Republican-leaning Iowa respondent concerned about the economy and a Chicago Democrat dissatisfied with her own party. Those interviews provide individual perspectives, not a separate poll or proof of how the broader population will vote. (Tang et al., 2026)

The study included 1,023 adults and reported a full-sample sampling margin of plus or minus 4.7 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. NORC’s Amplify AAPI panel supplied the sample, and the University of California, Berkeley funded the study. (AP-NORC & AAPI Data, 2026b)

The findings describe adults, not a likely-voter electorate or a state-by-state forecast. The published methodology also warns that sampling error is only one possible source of survey error. The results cannot establish November turnout, the outcome of individual races, or uniform views across the many communities included in the AAPI population. (AP-NORC & AAPI Data, 2026b)

Editorial Opinion

Both parties should resist turning this survey into a victory announcement. Democrats have evidence of an advantage on economic trust, but also evidence that many respondents remain dissatisfied with the party. Republicans have reason to address that trust deficit rather than explain it away. The useful political question is what candidates propose to do about household costs, with credible limits and tradeoffs. A national survey can help identify that question; it cannot award seats in Congress.

References

The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research & AAPI Data.
